5 Facts to Consider Before Buying a Hoverboard

Remember the film, ‘Back To the Future’? It boosted the popularity of the self-balancing scooter, which is also known as the ‘hoverboard’. Kids and kids at heart love this high-tech, futuristic modes of transportation, which consists of two 6.5-inch wheels, an electric motor, and a broad footboard with a gripping surface. They make excellent gifts to kids and they are fun to ride. However, there are certain facts you must consider before you buy one. Here are five of them:

  1. The hoverboard does not really hover or float – It still has wheels, after all. So far, technology that can let hoverboards float and fly without wheels is not yet available. Hence, do not expect your self-balancing scooter to actually make you fly.

  1. It is not for the faint-hearted – If you can balance on a skateboard or a bicycle, then you should be able to balance properly on a hoverboard. Simply lean towards one direction or the other, and leave the rest to the self-balancing scooter. However, remember that it does not have handles, so you need to be able to maintain your balance efficiently. Be sure to practice before using it to travel long distances. With experience, you could probably learn to do fakies and jumps, with a hoverboard, too.

  1. The speed – Do not expect your hoverboard to make you travel as fast as a bullet. Many self-balancing scooters can reach a speed of around 10 miles per hour, but that is already fast enough and safer for riders, too.

  1. Distance of travel – Hoverboards run on electric motors and lithium batteries, which require charging every now and then. Most models can let you travel up to 20 miles on a full charge.

  1. Always prefer a high-quality hoverboard – Avoid fakes and class A products that are dirt cheap. Chances are, they have cheap batteries that could explode or catch fire, and they will break easily, too.
